SONORES Project

The artist started in 2010 the SONORES project as an intuitive sonorous exploration of the ceramics associated with the investigation of different clays and shapes. This constituted the common thread from the beginning till now, but in less than 10 years, the project became a complex edifice with different levels, intrinsically linked. It travelled from Brussels and Paris to Riga and Siena, from Zagreb and Ljubljana to New Taipei and Beijing, to name only a few cities where SONORES met a passionate audience and received recognition.

Even if many cultures in the world make ceramic instruments and, sometimes, students or artists impressed these last years by the SONORES objects or installations, are tempted to walk in Ana Maria Asan’s footsteps, by combining ceramics and electroacoustics she has her unique art vision and coherence - the specific mark of all pioneers. Her approach has nothing to do with entertainment or randomness.

Partially borrowed to design, partially to nature - but always streamlined – the objects’ shape gives evidence to a relationship with the human body: arms, mouth, hands… They are not conceived as musical instruments; the artist is the one who decides to handle them in front of the microphone (or rarely, the audience, in the case of specific installations). The visitor becomes often the listener of an interior - real or imagined - world. Furthermore, the key words of Asan’s art are « perception » and « memory ».

Through their sonorous potential, Ana Maria Asan’s ceramics lead to introspection, even contemplating. They remind us the human soul.
